Adobe Adds Generative AI Features to Photoshop Software: Transforming Image Editing with AI
Adobe Inc announced on Tuesday that it is incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) technology for generating imagery into its flagship software, Photoshop, used for image editing.
This move marks the beginning of a significant initiative by the San Jose-based company to integrate AI technologies into its suite of programs catering to creative professionals.
While AI programs like OpenAI's Dall-E have garnered attention for their ability to transform text prompts into images, their widespread adoption by large corporations has been limited due to legal concerns surrounding the data used to train these systems.
To address these concerns, Adobe has developed a core technology system called Firefly, which utilizes legally obtained image data. Adobe asserts that Firefly can be used in commercial settings, providing a solution to the legal challenges faced by AI-generated content.
Adobe has been testing the Firefly system for approximately six weeks through a standalone website. On Tuesday, the company announced its plan to integrate Firefly-based features into Photoshop, which is arguably their most well-known product.
One of the new features, "Generative Fill," will enable users to extend cropped images by incorporating computer-generated content or adding features based on text descriptions.
For example, this feature can take a photo of a single flower and transform it into a captivating scene with a field of flowers against a majestic mountain range.
Ely Greenfield, the Chief Technology Officer for Digital Media at Adobe, emphasized that the purpose of this tool is not to replace graphic artists but to expedite their creative process by quickly generating new images from multiple ideas. Previously, artists would have spent valuable hours searching through photo archives and manually piecing together elements from existing images.
"This just dramatically accelerates that production work," Greenfield stated.
With Adobe's integration of generative AI features into Photoshop, image editing is set to undergo a transformative shift. The new capabilities will empower users to push the boundaries of their creativity, unleashing a multitude of possibilities for image manipulation and creation.
By harnessing the power of AI, Adobe aims to enhance the efficiency and productivity of creative professionals, providing them with a tool that accelerates the image creation process while preserving the artistic vision and expertise of graphic artists. With these advancements, Adobe reaffirms its commitment to innovation in the realm of digital media.
